HELLO, MY NAME IS LINDA DECARLO
Do you ever wonder why some people create joyful, fulfilling personal and business lives, filled with amazing possibilities while others strain and struggle?
I’ve wondered about this since I was a child. As I matured, I began studying everything I could about Personal Development Principles, and because of my true desire for answers I did so for over over 35 years.
Early on, I learned that creating a truly happy successful business and personal life is not about your age, education, talent, ability, luck or even genius.
It is about simple, but critical concepts that few people understand, and even fewer really use.
I think we have all experienced (or know people who have experienced) situations like being in a career or business you hated for years, battling that bathroom scale for what feels like eternity, or being in a relationship that brings with it more unease than real satisfaction. Not to mention areas such as health and money.
And then there’s the topic of the dreams and goals you have given up on or somehow forgotten along the way. That boutique you wanted to open, degree you wanted to get, book you wanted to write, relationship you wanted to find or maybe mend, health you wanted to reclaim, internet business you could never quite get off the ground, or that trip you always wanted to take.
And then there’s a whole deeper level.
What about the truly unique contribution that somewhere deep inside you know you are here to make? As children when we dared to use our imagination and dream big dreams we were often met with phrases like:
“Don’t get a big head!”
“It’s not nice to brag!”
“You need to fit in!”
“What will the neighbors think?”
“Where did you get that bright idea?”
Throughout your life you may have been told (or told yourself) things like:
You’re too young.
You’re too old.
You’re not smart enough.
You don’t have the money.
You don’t have the education.
You don’t know the “right” people.
You should’ve done that years ago.
And, what I’ve come to think as the worst one of all:
“WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE ANYWAY?”
OK, take a deep breath….. because that is the question I want to ask you now:
Seriously…..WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?
It is that person…your Highest, Best, and Most Authentic Self that is waiting to be heard. That is the person wanting you to “Live the Life You Have Imagined” as Thoreau put it so beautifully.
So, how exactly do you do that?
You Master Your Mindset.
Let me give you a visual. Picture your life like a large tree with many branches. Let’s say each branch represents an area of your life and/or work, so you have branches for health, money, work, time, self-esteem, your love relationship, friends, family, etc.
Some of these areas are working well and some are not. We might have great health or are tired all the time, have an abundance of clients or not nearly enough, feel clear, focused and in control, or overwhelmed, distracted and on a roller coaster. We have solid self-esteem or suffer from fear and doubt, comparison, competition and/or lack of deserving. The list goes on. I think you get the idea!
Most people doggedly jump from branch to branch trying to fix each problem only to find that the moment one area is “fixed” a new problem area pops up or another area gets worse. Ah, life on planet earth!
As you may have already experienced, “branch fixing” is a surefire path to overwhelm, burnout and exhaustion. So, what can we do instead? We can heal the roots of our own tree. The roots are our Mindset. The more we master our Mindset, the better able we are to move through the challenges of each and every branch.
A Bit of the Backstory:
My interest in Mindset Mastery started in the late 70’s. At the time I worked in Corporate Human Resources at a major bank. I was teaching the bank’s Management Training Program and found it didn’t go deep enough. I was conducting workshops on topics like “The 22 Ways to Overcome Procrastination.” The challenge was picking one and actually using it. I didn’t think anyone actually was. I knew I wasn’t either, and I was teaching it!
Over time I had the realization that my HR department…. yes, the very same department that was teaching “How to Run an Effective Meeting” had what surely must have been the worst 7-hour staff meetings on the planet.
The question, “Why do people know what to do to be happier, healthier, more productive, and yet don’t do it?” plagued me.
Can you relate in your own life and work?
I started studying everything I could to answer that question, and so began my Personal Development Quest. Now, well into its 40th year, it has included daily study on topics like Success Principles, Self-Esteem, Spirituality, Stress Management, Personal Power, Happiness, Decision Making, Belief Shifting, Goal Setting and Self-Management.
I attended workshops, retreats, and teleclasses too numerous to count. I broke boards, walked on hot coals (twice!) and studied in person with some of the biggest names in the Personal Development field. Over and over again from my studies and from the lives of my tens of thousands of workshop participants, my many clients and my own life, I learned that Mindset is the key determining factor of success in all areas of life. I eventually began teaching and now coaching Mindset Mastery.
What is Our Mindset?
Our Mindset is a group of beliefs, thoughts, assumptions, and perceptions. It is our world view. It is like the glasses we wear. If we wear blue tinted glasses, to us, everything is blue.
Most people are only vaguely aware of their Mindset. They think of their perceptions as “the way things are”, the state of the economy, marketing is hard, it’s difficult to find clients or a great love relationship, there is never enough time or money, you get diseases as you age, etc. The challenge surrounding these perceptions is that we tend to prove what we believe and then take action (or inaction) based on that proof.
To create success in life and work, we need to consistently notice if what we are thinking is bringing us closer to our goals or taking us further away. If it’s not bringing us closer, we must make consistent and persistent changes.
